There is nothing more un-rock & roll than shorts. We learned this on our first tour. Our first tour was opening for Neil Young and the Pretenders and we wore fucking shorts onstage every night because it was hot. Except now I look back at it and we look like stagehands. You kind of look like a kid in shorts unless you wear little short ones. Then you’re like a hooker.
I am going to try to see Jens Lekman, and one of my favorite records of the year was the National, Boxer.

researchers at Stanford University estimated the number of early humans may have shrunk as low as 2,000 before numbers began to expand again in the early Stone Age.

"Tiny bands of early humans, forced apart by harsh environmental conditions, coming back from the brink to reunite and populate the world. Truly an epic drama, written in our DNA."

Dignan: Pointless act! You don't give a 500 dollar tip to the housekeeper! That's inappropriate! That's inexcusable! That, I don't forgive! What were you thinking? What were you thinking?

Guy in bathroom: Hey, you're in the Army, yes?
Dignan: No, I just have short hair.

Anthony: Which part of Mexico are you from?
Inez: Paraguay.

Three of the four major labels have become partners in MySpace Music, which will extend MySpace's current musical offerings to merchandise, song downloads and more.[...]
Money generated from advertising on indie bands' profile pages will flow, in part, to the major labels. Wasn't the internet supposed to be about routing around this sort of damage?[...]
They will, of course, receive a healthy share of their own song and merchandise sales, but none of the money generated by advertisements on their profile pages. That money will go to MySpace owner News Corp., the major labels and any indie music aggregators that manage to sign equity deals with MySpace [...] [wired]

oh oh oh ohhhh

One thing hasn't changed: people still do most of their listening to music via the radio, followed by playing CDs.

Listening to music on a computer has the third largest number of people, followed by listening on a portable device like an iPod.

Apple iTunes digital music sales are still 10 times that of AmazonMP3 on a unit basis. Amazon doesn't yet have the huge teenage audience of iTunes. Nor does it have a large female audience. But Amazon customers are more likely than those on iTunes to buy albums rather than single tracks. [guardian]

The indie kids learned to do a lot in the last decade: First they found downloading, then they discovered dancing and finally—they went to work. And on their way to their 10 a.m. start times, their casual Mondays-through-Fridays, their five-dollar-a-day coffee habits, they assembled a so-appropriate soundtrack. Something that keeps their cred intact, their superiors pacified (even at audible-over-the-cubicles volume) and their New Yorker reading appropriately soundtracked. [HOW INDIE ROCK MORPHED INTO ADULT CONTEMPORARY]

Scientists at IBM say they have developed a new type of digital storage which would enable a device such as an MP3 player to store about half a million songs - or 3,500 films - and cost far less to produce.[Times Online]

"This year, we have an amazing concept going. For the first time ever, we're going to be working with iTunes, and we're going to be creating unique content, so we're going to have collaborations — people collaborating on songs — and then put them on iTunes, and then they'll perform them at Lollapalooza for a once-in-a-lifetime experience," he said. "These will be recorded in a studio, but of course because we can share files online, we don't have to be in the same place at the same time — we have finishing studios all over the world for the artists to finish the piece off. We'll start to talk with Radiohead about putting them with someone they'd like to collaborate with, tell them how it's going to go down."

"So a three-day pass costs $200. I would say that if you were to go see Radiohead, you could probably buy a pretty good ticket to go see Radiohead for $200," he said. "Well, you'll get to see Radiohead and 119 other groups for three days, with organic foods, and it's a completely interactive festival that's carbon-neutral. That's pretty amazing."
